Cabinets, Paint and Brick

The last month has been very busy. Since my last update, custom cabinets have been installed, the whole house has been painted, and tile work has started. Also, the countertops have been measured and I ordered all the blinds for the windows. Last week they started the brick and they were finishing today when I stopped by. My builder is working on making the doors and drawers for the cabinets. Today the electrical outlets were installed, and most of the lighting fixtures were installed. The goal is to be finished by Thanksgiving. I hope we make it!! I'm including some photos of the different things that have happened over the last month.

I painted all the trim and cabinets Benjamin Moore - Decorator's White and the main areas of the house Benjamin Moore Harbor Gray.

Making Progress

Last week the drywall was finished on Tuesday, October 1. My builder Nam and his crew started cutting baseboard, crown molding and plywood for cabinets and bookshelves. Wednesday after work I met with Nam and we walked through the house and discussed all the cabinets, vanities, bookshelves, etc... in the whole house. It took 2 hours. I'm very happy with the kitchen. I was able to put in all the bells and whistles that were on my wish list.

Besides the kitchen, bathrooms and closets, he's also adding shelving to the laundry room a nook at the top of the stairs and the wall with the window in the craft room-it will have built-ins with a window seat. He is hoping to have the cabinets completed this week and then he will order the doors. It takes about 2 weeks to get the doors.

They started installing the frames around the windows, baseboard and crown molding. I'm including some pictures. Also, I painted the wall in the craft room with the window that will be behind the built-in shelving so it would be painted when he put in the shelves. The color is Valspar Brushed Lavender. It's kind of hard to see the color in the photo because there wasn't much light in there when I was trying get the photo.

The final picture is of my missing window for the toilet room in the master bath. The windows were all installed at the end of August, but this one didn't make it. It's been "lost" at the supplier. They ordered a new one and it's also "lost." So, another one was ordered Tuesday, October 1. It may take 2 weeks to get here. The problem is, we can't pass the next inspection without the window being installed and that means we can't start the brick. So when the window comes in, the brick can finally go on. I guess it's always something.

Finally Drywall!!

Since my last post a lot has happened. All the wiring has been completed for electrical and for my speaker and surround sound systems. The plumbing is also finished and everything has passed inspection. The fireplace failed the first inspection, but now it vents out the roof and it passed. The fireplace issue pushed the drywall workers back a week, but they came yesterday and finished the first phase today. They will start taping and mudding tomorrow and finish by the end of next week - fingers crossed.

This is very fun since the walls make it really look like a house and I can get a feel for the size of the rooms and how each place relates to the others.

The only bad news this week is that the brick I picked out - which is on a couple of the houses in the neighborhood - has been discontinued. I'm very sad because I LOVE that brick and it was an easy decision. Now, it's a hard decision since they don't really make anything too similar and it will have to be approved by the architectural review committee. I hope they like whatever I finally pick out! To be continued...

Below are pictures of different rooms with drywall. Some of them I haven't posted before, because they didn't look like much until today. Now you can tell what they look like. You can see a big box that's been framed out in the master closet. They had to put the HVAC return there. I figure I can use as a little table - maybe put a mirror over it.

More Framing and Insulation

Lots of things have happened since my last post a couple of weeks ago. The framers FINALLY came and put in the stairs to the attic. Since that's all they did, and they never came back, my builder framed in the little bench in the master shower and the half wall fireplace. The fireplace came, it will be see through and have a surround around the glass.

Yesterday we passed the last inspections for rough-in plumbing, electrical and HVAC. Today insulation was installed and there will be an insulation inspection Monday and hopefully drywall will start to go up Tuesday. I've attached some photos of the recent developments.

Finally Windows

Progress is very slow. There are major issues with framers who won't show to finish up their work. Insulation and drywall cannot happen until the framers complete everything. My builder has got to work this out. I'm not very happy right now.

But, at long last, after many cancelled deadlines, the windows were finally installed. The front windows went in Wednesday, August 28 and the back windows and exterior doors were installed on Saturday, August 31. Some plumbing items have started showing up and the exterior has been reinforced so I'm hopeful brick might go on soon - since it is not dependent on the framers. I hope to see progress this week - I'll post when something happens.

In the mean time, I've been studying full home audio systems and I've decided to add speakers to every room and a mid-level audio system. If we don't get drywall soon, there's no telling what else I might find to put behind my walls!

Here are some pictures from this week.
